Back to Biking Courses

Our CBT Courses Start at 9:00am and finish between 3-5pm,

The CBT is not a TEST it is a Training Course with 5 Elements

A Introduction

B Practical on Site Training

C Practical on Site Training with Riding

D Pre Road Briefing

E Minimum 2 Hour Road Ride

Once completed you will be issued a DL196 Certificate which enables you to ride on the Public Highway unaccompanied for up to 2 Years,

Please Visit the Link  for more information. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/compulsory-basic-training-cb mt-syllabus-and-guidance-notes

The aim of a CBT course is to teach you the BASIC skills you need to stay safe whilst on the road. We ask that you come to us with a good knowledge of the Highway Code, but more than anything else, we just want you to enjoy the day, hopefully the first of many on two wheels.

In order to complete your CBT, you must have a valid provisional licence for the bike you’re going to ride:

  • 16 years old – 50cc scooter or motorbike-style moped

  • 17 years or older – 125cc geared motorbike or scooter

Additionally, you must be able to read a standard number plate from at least 20.5 metres.

You will need to produce your provisional licence on the day of your training. Please don't forget them as you can't train with us without them!

What to wear

At Castleton Rider Training, we can provide jackets, gloves, helmets and waterproof over trousers in most sizes for our students. We don't supply motorcycle trousers or bike boots. Please wear jeans and sturdy footwear, preferably boots that cover the ankle – trainers offer little protection when you're riding a motorbike.

DIRECT ACCESS SCHEME (D.A.S)

We are committed to helping you complete the Direct Access Scheme, so you can hold a full, unrestricted motorbike licence. We the only approved training body (ATB) in Rochdale, so you can rest assured that you’ll receive only the best Direct Access Scheme training.

You will need a Current CBT CERTIFICATE and THEORY TEST CERTIFICATE

Who can take the Direct Access Scheme?

In order to start your DAS training, you need to either be  24 years or older, or be 21 or older, passed an A2 test and been riding for 2 years.

What to expect from your Direct Access Scheme (DAS) Module 1 & Module 2 tests

DAS Module 1 – Your module 1 tests consists of a series of low speed exercises, along with 3 higher speed exercises.

DAS Module 2 – This practical road ride and test of how you react in different traffic situations lasts around 40 minutes..

Direct Access Scheme/A2 Licence

If you’re currently under 24 and have held your full A2 licence for two years or more, you can do the progressive Direct Access Scheme to move up to a full unrestricted licence. If this is the case, you don’t need the CBT or Theory, just take your practical Module 1 and Module 2 tests again..

When you start your Direct Access Scheme with us, we always go at a pace that suits you and your instructor. You will be given lots of encouragement and advice, and we’ll give you a gentle push in the right direction, whilst ensuring you never have to do an exercise you’re uncomfortable with.

INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

If you wish to become a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) certified motorcycle instructor, qualified to deliver Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) courses and instruct on the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) for an approved Training Body (ATB), or even open your own ATB, then we have the course for you.

Our motorcycle instructor training package at Castleton Rochdale ,has proven to be very successful with candidates achieving very high first time pass rates in the DVSA assessment.

The Law & Motorcycle training

The motorcycle training industry is regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and there are strict rules associated with motorcycle training.

The licensing of motorcyclists is also quite a complicated matter with rules relating to the age, name, size and power of motorcycles.

Essentially at present there are three stages of qualification to become a fully qualified motorcycle instructor.

Down trained
Trained and assessed by a qualified instructor and permitted to train at Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) level only within the ATB that trained you.

CBT1
Attend the DVSA centre and pass a rigorous two day assessment. This permits you to train at CBT level and down train other new instructors. This is the minimum qualification to hold an Approved Training Body Status (ATB).

DAS
Once already qualified as a CBT1C (cannot progress directly to DAS) attend DVSA Centre and pass a further half-day assessment. This permits you to train DAS in addition to CBT.

Completed my CBT with Ash at Castleton Rider Training. Had a great day - Ash was very patient and knowledgeable. Will be going back to get my full licence.....

Absolutely brilliant! From start to finish, Martin and Ash were easy to deal with, friendly and professional. Our 16 year old son had a great experience doing his CBT and from being a complete novice, now has the confidence to begin his riding!
