Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
Your gateway to legal road riding. A comprehensive training course designed to give you the skills and confidence to stay safe on two wheels.
The First Step to Your License
It’s not a test, it’s a training course designed for your safety and enjoyment.
The aim of a CBT course is to teach you the basic skills you need to stay safe while on the road. At Castleton Rider Training, we want you to enjoy the day—hopefully the first of many on two wheels. Once completed, you will be issued a DL196 Certificate, which enables you to ride on the public highway unaccompanied for up to 2 years.
The course is structured into five essential elements, ensuring a progressive learning experience from the classroom to the open road.
The 5 Elements of CBT:
- Element A: Introduction & Eyesight Check
- Element B: Practical On-Site Training
- Element C: Practical On-Site Riding
- Element D: Pre-Road Briefing
- Element E: Minimum 2-Hour Road Ride
Legal Requirements
You must have a valid provisional licence. 16-year-olds can ride a 50cc moped, while those 17+ can ride a 125cc scooter or geared bike. You must also read a number plate from 20.5 metres.
What to Wear
We provide helmets, jackets, and gloves. Please wear thick jeans and sturdy footwear/boots that cover the ankle. Note: Trainers offer little protection and are not recommended.
Before You Arrive
Please come with a good knowledge of the Highway Code. Courses start at 9:00am sharp and finish between 3-5pm. Remember to bring your physical licence on the day!
